Escape to Paradise: 5-Bedroom Kandy Luxury B&B Awaits!
Escape to Paradise: Seriously Though, Does it Live Up to the Hype? (A Messy, Honest Review)
Alright, buckle up buttercups, because I'm fresh off a stay at "Escape to Paradise: 5-Bedroom Kandy Luxury B&B Awaits!" and let me tell you, the name alone sets a high bar. "Paradise," huh? We'll see about that. This review isn't going to be your typical, sterile hotel rundown. This is going to be messy, real, and hopefully, actually helpful.
First Impressions (And the Steep Hill): Getting there was an adventure in itself. Kandy, bless its heart, is all hills. And I mean hills. Be prepared for a climb, especially if you're relying on a tuk-tuk. Accessibility: Okay, I need to be honest up front. This place isn’t exactly a beacon of accessibility. They list "Facilities for disabled guests," and that’s great, but I didn't see a ton of actual accessibility features. Think stairs, uneven paths – it's definitely not a breeze for folks with mobility issues. The elevator does exists, but is small and might not meet everyone needs. Sadly, Wheelchair accessible, feels like a stretch.
The Rooms: Living the Dream (Maybe?)
Okay, the rooms. They ARE lovely. Like, undeniably gorgeous. Available in all rooms: Air conditioning is a godsend in Sri Lanka (trust me), and the Free Wi-Fi in all rooms saved my bacon more than once. Air conditioning, Alarm clock, Bathrobes, Bathroom phone, Bathtub, Blackout curtains, Carpeting, Closet, Coffee/tea maker, Complimentary tea, Daily housekeeping, Desk, Extra long bed, Free bottled water, Hair dryer, High floor, In-room safe box, Interconnecting room(s) available, Internet access – LAN, Internet access – wireless, Ironing facilities, Laptop workspace, Linens, Mini bar, Mirror, Non-smoking, On-demand movies, Private bathroom, Reading light, Refrigerator, Safety/security feature, Satellite/cable channels, Scale, Seating area, Separate shower/bathtub, Shower, Slippers, Smoke detector, Socket near the bed, Sofa, Soundproofing, Telephone, Toiletries, Towels, Umbrella, Visual alarm, Wake-up service, Wi-Fi [free], Window that opens. The Extra long bed was a definite win, as was the Coffee/tea maker (essential for my sanity). The layout, like a well-designed movie set. Okay, I admit it, I might have spent longer in the bathtub than I let on. I also appreciated the Smoke detector and Safety/security feature.
Internet: The Great Wi-Fi Gamble
Internet, Internet [LAN], Internet services, Wi-Fi in public areas, Free Wi-Fi in all rooms! Let's be real. Wi-Fi is life. And while the Free Wi-Fi in all rooms was a lifesaver, the consistency wasn’t always perfect. It's Sri Lanka, people. Embrace the occasional buffering and the fact that those Internet access – LAN ports will probably be gathering dust. I mostly stuck to my phone to connect, while my family, including my teenager, found the Internet access – wireless to be adequate.
Relaxation & Recreation: Paradise, or Just a Good Day Spa?
This is where things get interesting. Things to do, ways to relax, Body scrub, Body wrap, Fitness center, Foot bath, Gym/fitness, Massage, Pool with view, Sauna, Spa, Spa/sauna, Steamroom, Swimming pool, Swimming pool [outdoor]. The Pool with a view? STUNNING. Seriously, the kind of view you could stare at for hours, sipping a cocktail (more on that later). Swimming pool [outdoor] was fantastic, and even though I didn't use the Fitness center or Gym/fitness, they looked well-equipped. The real highlight? The spa. Okay, that Spa/sauna, I didn't use them. but the Massage, and Foot bath were pretty darn amazing. I swear, that masseuse could feel the tension in my shoulders just by looking at me. Body scrub and Body wrap were offered, that I didn't want to try, I am not a spa, and therefore I didn't try them.
Food, Glorious Food (and the Occasional Mishap):
Dining, drinking, and snacking, A la carte in restaurant, Alternative meal arrangement, Asian breakfast, Asian cuisine in restaurant, Bar, Bottle of water, Breakfast [buffet], Breakfast service, Buffet in restaurant, Coffee/tea in restaurant, Coffee shop, Desserts in restaurant, Happy hour, International cuisine in restaurant, Poolside bar, Restaurants, Room service [24-hour], Salad in restaurant, Snack bar, Soup in restaurant, Vegetarian restaurant, Western breakfast, Western cuisine in restaurant. The Breakfast [buffet] was a feast. Honestly, it was almost too much food. The Asian breakfast was a great way to start the day. I loved the Coffee/tea in restaurant, and the Coffee shop was a nice option too.
Now, the Restaurants: There are a few options, and the A la carte in restaurant was good, but I really recommend trying the Asian cuisine in restaurant. That night that was soooooo good. I didn’t try the Western cuisine in restaurant due to my mood, because I wanted to try the local food. The Poolside bar was perfect for those sundowners. One evening, I decided on Room service [24-hour], I wanted a late-night snack, but the order got a little messed up. But hey, these things happen, you know?
Cleanliness, Safety & The "Hygiene Certification" Buzz:
Cleanliness and safety, Anti-viral cleaning products, Breakfast in room, Breakfast takeaway service, Cashless payment service, Daily disinfection in common areas, Doctor/nurse on call, First aid kit, Hand sanitizer, Hot water linen and laundry washing, Hygiene certification, Individually-wrapped food options, Physical distancing of at least 1 meter, Professional-grade sanitizing services, Room sanitization opt-out available, Rooms sanitized between stays, Safe dining setup, Sanitized kitchen and tableware items, Shared stationery removed, Staff trained in safety protocol, Sterilizing equipment. I felt pretty safe here. Everything seemed super clean, and they definitely took hygiene seriously. Lots of Hand sanitizer around, and the staff were masked up. The Hygiene certification obviously means something. The fact that they offer Rooms sanitized between stays and Anti-viral cleaning products gave me a lot of piece of mind
Services & Conveniences: The Good, the Bad, And The Laundry:
Services and conveniences, Air conditioning in public area, Audio-visual equipment for special events, Business facilities, Cash withdrawal, Concierge, Contactless check-in/out, Convenience store, Currency exchange, Daily housekeeping, Doorman, Dry cleaning, Elevator, Essential condiments, Facilities for disabled guests, Food delivery, Gift/souvenir shop, Indoor venue for special events, Invoice provided, Ironing service, Laundry service, Luggage storage, Meeting/banquet facilities, Meetings, Meeting stationery, On-site event hosting, Outdoor venue for special events, Projector/LED display, Safety deposit boxes, Seminars, Shrine, Smoking area, Terrace, Wi-Fi for special events, Xerox/fax in business center. Okay, let's get this out of the way: the Laundry service was a lifesaver. A goddamn lifesaver because I packed (maybe) a little too light for a five-day trip. The Daily housekeeping was efficient and friendly. They have a Gift/souvenir shop, a Convenience store which is handy, and the Cash withdrawal option is very handy too. The Concierge was helpful with recommendations. The Smoking area is clearly marked, if you are a smoker like me, that is a plus.
For the Kids (and the Kid-at-Heart):
For the kids, Babysitting service, Family/child friendly, Kids facilities, Kids meal. If you are traveling with kids, you'll be fine. The Family/child friendly element is definitely there, I observed kids around the pool and running in the garden. I cannot give my opinion on the Babysitting service, since I don't have any kids.
Getting Around: Smooth Sailing, Mostly:
Getting around, Airport transfer, Bicycle parking, Car park [free of charge], Car park [on-site], Car power charging station, Taxi service, Valet parking. The Car park [free of charge] was a definite plus. The Airport transfer was smooth and hassle-free.
Location, Location, Location…
Okay, the location is both a pro and a con. It's in a quieter part of Kandy, which is fantastic for escaping the city’s chaos. But that also means you're a little further from the main attractions. So, be prepared to budget for transport (the Taxi service worked well for me).
The Verdict: Paradise? Maybe a "Paradise-Adjacent" Situation.
So, did "Escape to Paradise" live up to its name? Honestly? Not quite. But it'
Bungoma, Kenya: Your Perfect Business & Leisure Escape!Alright, buckle up, buttercups. This isn't your perfectly curated travel brochure. This is my Kandy, Sri Lanka, Sunrise-5 Bedroom B&B Luxury House itinerary, and trust me, it's gonna be a wild ride. Let's see if I can even stick to a schedule… knowing me, probably not.
Day 1: Arrival, Royal Botanical Garden – And an Unexpected Beetle Brawl
Morning (But like, late morning, because jet lag is REAL): Land in Sri Lanka! I’m thinking I book the airport pickup shuttle from the B&B. The thought of battling the local transit right after a 20-hour flight… yeah, no thanks. I'm envisioning a smooth, luxurious transfer in a comfy car. It's called the "Luxury House," so I'm expecting a red-carpet vibe. (Narrator: Spoiler alert: It was a nice car, but the red carpet was imaginary.)
Afternoon: Check into Kandy Sunrise. Five bedrooms? For, uh, myself? Okay, yes, it's a bit extravagant, but hey, I'm treating myself! The website photos showed those stunning views, so I'm already envisioning myself on that veranda, sipping a pineapple juice and… Oh, the view! It's seriously breathtaking. Okay, okay. I'm trying to sound composed, but my jaw actually dropped. The house itself is gorgeous, but that view? That's what I came for.
Afternoon/Early Evening: Off to the Royal Botanical Garden! Everyone raves about it, and I figured a gentle stroll among exotic flora would be just the thing to shake off the travel grogginess. The place is massive! Huge trees, vibrant flowers… Honestly, felt like wandering through a living, breathing painting. Now, here’s where it gets delightfully messy. I was happily snapping photos of a giant orchid when - BANG! a beetle, this HUGE iridescent monstrosity, decides my head is its personal landing strip. I yelped, jumped, and basically made a scene. Two little Sri Lankan kids started cracking up. I eventually ran for it, chased by a swarm of curious beetles, which I could describe as the biggest insects I ever saw. That was not in the brochure!
Evening: Dinner at a local restaurant. (Recommendation from the B&B, hopefully, because I'm relying on them for anything beyond breathing). Hoping for some spicy, authentic Sri Lankan fare. Expecting to be pleasantly surprised!
Day 2: Temple of the Tooth, Kandy Lake – And The Curse of the Starch
Morning: Temple of the Tooth. Okay, stepping into serious culture mode. Got my shoulders covered (thanks, B&B for the thoughtful sarong!), and I'm ready to witness some history and the most sacred place. The atmosphere is electric, the detail incredible, the people so gentle and it's just amazing. I think I'd prefer it even as a daily routine of meditation.
Morning/Midday: A wander around Kandy Lake. I'm picturing a leisurely amble, maybe some people-watching. The lake itself is pretty, but I got so distracted by a particularly persistent vendor selling… bags of sticky, boiled rice. Seriously, why? He kept gesturing at me with a bag of this stuff, and with the heat I felt like I was drowning in a sea of carbs. I mean, I get it, it's part of the local culture, but it triggered flashbacks of elementary school lunches? No way!
Afternoon: Okay, I’m going to lean into the "luxury" part of the Luxury House. Massaging in the premises! I need to de-stress from the Great Beetle Attack of Day 1 and the Sticky Rice Incident.
Evening: Cooking class! I'm terrible at cooking, but I figured this is a great chance to try something new, and the food is likely to be delicious. Pray for me, and for the kitchen.
Day 3: Hiking – And a Misadventure with a Tuk-Tuk
Morning: Time for some adventure! I found a local hiking trail recommended by the B&B. It’s supposed to offer amazing views of the surrounding hills. I'm packing water, sunscreen, a hat. This is where things could get interesting. I’m also bringing a friend, a phone that's always ready to be taking pictures. I better not stumble on a snake, okay?
Afternoon: Food stop. I'll probably stop by a little village. I'm hoping to find some local "kottu" (fried roti), because I've heard it's a must-try.
Evening: Tuk-tuk ride to a traditional Kandyan dance performance. I was warned about the tuk-tuk negotiations, and I thought I was prepared. Yeah, no. The driver started at a ridiculous price, the usual tourist trap. I bartered him down, felt smug. Until he took us on a route that added an extra half-hour. I paid my fare, but I felt the sting of being played.
Evening: Kandyan dancing. Okay, now THIS was worth it. The costumes! The music! The energy! I even tried to copy some moves (badly, I’m sure).
Day 4: Tea Plantation, More Relaxation – and the Realization That I Brought Too Many Books
Morning: Day trip to a tea plantation. The lush green… breathtaking. I'm imagining sipping fresh tea, learning about the process, buying a mountain of tea to bring home. Oh, and posing for Instagram photos. I really loved that place.
Afternoon: Back to the B&B for… absolutely nothing. A long nap, a good book, maybe some journaling. I feel this is finally coming down to a routine.
Evening: The thing is, I've started to realise that I packed about six books. I've barely touched one. My suitcase is basically a mobile library. It’s the curse of a bookworm’s overenthusiastic packing. Must… resist… urge… to buy… more… books…
Day 5: Departure – Sunsets and Sadness
Morning: One last sunrise from the veranda. Probably a few tears. I'm getting ridiculously attached to the view!
Morning: Final Sri Lankan breakfast. Savoring every bite (and probably going back for seconds).
Afternoon: Airport transfer. Wishing I could stay longer. I haven’t seen half of what I wanted, but that’s okay. This trip wasn’t about ticking boxes, but about experiencing it all, the good and the utterly bizarre.
Evening: Goodbye, Kandy. Farewell Sri Lanka. Until the next time!
